What the job involves
The deputy manager is the manager’s right hand and takes charge when they’re not there. Alongside time in the rooms, you’ll typically:
- Help plan staff rotas and keep ratios right across the nursery
- Support and supervise room leaders and practitioners
- Monitor the quality of teaching, observations and the learning environment
- Act as deputy designated safeguarding lead
- Build strong relationships with parents and handle concerns
- Help prepare the nursery for Ofsted inspection
Who it suits
You’re an experienced leader who can balance hands-on work with paperwork, and you’re ready for responsibility for the whole setting, not just one room.
Where it can lead
Deputy managers often move up to nursery manager. Nurseries look for deputies who share their ethos and want to grow with them.
