What the job involves
The special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) leads a nursery’s support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The role usually includes:
- Helping staff spot when a child may need extra support
- Writing and reviewing support plans with key persons and parents
- Working with health visitors, speech and language therapists and the local authority
- Supporting applications for extra funding or an EHC needs assessment
- Training and advising colleagues on inclusive practice
In many nurseries the SENCo is also a practitioner, room leader or deputy, so the role is often combined with time in the room.
