What the job involves
A room leader runs one room — baby, toddler or pre-school — day to day. You’ll still spend most of your time with the children, and you’ll also:
- Plan activities and the learning environment using the EYFS
- Organise the room’s routine, staff breaks and ratios
- Support, guide and help train the practitioners in your team
- Check key person observations and progress records
- Talk to parents about their child’s day and development
- Make sure safeguarding and health and safety procedures are followed
Who it suits
You’re an experienced Level 3 practitioner who others already come to for advice. You’re calm under pressure, good at keeping a room organised and confident speaking to parents.
Where it can lead
Room leader is a natural step towards deputy manager. Many room leaders also study for a Level 5 qualification in leadership.
Working with us
Room leader roles can be hard for nurseries to fill, so good candidates are in demand for permanent positions. We also have temporary room leader cover. Register and tell us which age group you lead best.
